Just for once, I thought I'd have a go at drawing and rendering a detailed background. It didn't exactly work as I planned, but I'm still quite pleased with the result. It's intentional that the scenery looks like layers of cardboard cutouts; it's a way of avoiding getting bogged down with perspectival issues.

This picture took months to finish because I couldn't decide whether I liked it better shaded with flat colour or smooth tones....
